It is well known for good health that we should be as active as possible. After bariatric surgery research has shown to maintain your weight loss then exercise is the key. This doesn’t have to mean going to classes or the gym, you can do something much more productive like a spring clean. Getting fit and also a clean and tidy house, what’s not to like?
Certain chores are the best for working out certain areas of your body.
Scrubbing the bath is best for toning arms and shoulder muscles, ironing however can strengthen your abs.
Here’s the lists of how many calories are burned doing housework:
1. Scrubbing the bath
Removing scum with some enthusiasm for 15minutes can burn 50 calories which is the same as 250 jumping jacks.2. laundry
If you load and unload the washing machine, hang up and put away this can all add up to 70 calories and hour. This is using the same energy as doing 70 sit ups!
3. Cleaning windows
If you can’t see out of the house then let the light in! An hour giving the windows a good clean burns 136 calories. That is the same as jogging for 15 minutes.
4. Washing up
If you spend 15 minutes washing the dishes every day, it adds up to 180 calories over a week. This is the same calories as swimming for just under 30 minutes.
5. Vacuuming
Vigorous vacuuming can burn 90 calories in half an hour, which is the same as 15 minutes of kickboxing. You can also work towards your recommended 10,000 steps a day.
6. Dusting
Dusting isn’t too onerous but can burn 25 calories in 15 minutes, that’s the same as 2 minutes of planking!
7. Ironing
If you spend 3 hours over a week ironing then you can burn 264 calories that is the same as a zumba class. Standing still for long periods of time burns calories and works your core muscles too. Make sure to press down evenly and switch arms so both get an even workout.
8. Making beds
Changing the beds for a family of four can burn 52 calories in 30 minutes (this is the same as a mile walk)
9. Mopping and sweeping
Cleaning the floors for 30 minutes can burn 96 calories which is equivalent to 15 minutes on the treadmill.
10. gardening
30 minutes of gardening can burn 200 calories which is the same as cycling steadily for four miles. Digging also works your shoulders and abs.
So if your weight loss has stalled or you just want to start getting fit then maybe it’s time for a spring clean!
