Feel fuller sooner when you eat
The Gastric
Sleeve
A Gastric Sleeve (also known as a sleeve gastrectomy) is a surgical weight loss procedure that removes part of the stomach. Following which you are required to eat smaller meals, we recommend following a lower fat, lower sugar meal plan. With some lifestyle changes, the operation can offer you some very positive lifestyle improvements including; health, quality of life, self-esteem and, of course, significant weight loss. Laparoscopic surgery usually results in a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery and less pain than open surgical procedures.
The
Operation
The majority of weight loss sleeve gastrostomies performed today use a laparoscopic technique which is
considered minimally invasive. Gastric sleeve procedures involve the surgeon creating a thin vertical sleeve of stomach, reducing the size of the stomach by 75%, the remaining of which is around the size of a banana.
After the operation you will feel fuller sooner when you eat, due to the reduction in the quantity of food that can enter the stomach, leading to noticeable weight loss. Following a gastric sleeve there is also evidence to suggest a reduction in the production of ghrelin, which is an appetite stimulant; this may result in a much reduced appetite.
What are
the risks?
As with any bariatric surgery there are associated risks, especially if you have any medical problems such as high blood pressure or heart disease. This is why you are assessed pre-operatively as fully as possible. There is a potential small risk of a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and procedures are put in place to minimise this.
