    The Gastric
     Bypass

    In the 1950s the first attempt at a Gastric Bypass was performed, by 1991 the surgery was used as an accepted treatment for morbid obesity. In recent years it has become one of the most popular bariatric surgeries available. A gastric bypass is also known as a Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass which works by bypassing the first section of the small intestine, the rest of the intestine is reattached to a new pouch that the surgeon creates using a stapling technique.
    The result for many patients is a dramatic weight loss in the initial months following the procedure due to the reduced food intake and important hormonal changes which result in a much reduced appetite. Other significant benefits include the remission of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnoea.

    The
     Operation

    The Gastric Bypass operation is performed using laparoscopy keyhole surgery; it is a major operation lasting one and a half hours. You can expect your hospital stay to be two nights, with a recovery time of two to four weeks before you can go back to work.
    The operation involves the creation of a pouch, essentially stapling the stomach to make it smaller; this is then connected to the intestine, bypassing the remaining stomach which allows food and beverages to only enter the new smaller stomach.

    There are a small number of complications associated with the surgery which can be serious including; leaking, blood clots and haemorrhages.
