Still unsure?

At this point you probably have many questions. Is a Gastric Band right for you? What is involved? How long does it take? What makes The Bariatric Group such specialists for the people in the South of England?
Let’s try to put your mind to rest…

The Gastric
Band

The first gastric (laparoscopic) band was fitted in 1993 and since then has been fitted hundreds of times every year.
The gastric band is placed around the top portion of the stomach and this creates a narrow channel. As food passes through into the stomach, this stimulates the vagus nerve and makes you feel fuller on a smaller portion of food. You eat less, feel more satisfied and lose weight gradually.
How much food passed into the stomach depends on the tightness of the band – this is a decision determined between yourself and the surgeon or our Bariatric Nurse Specialist, based on your lifestyle and the weight loss journey that is realistic for you.

The
Operation

The gastric band operation is a quick procedure, taking just one hour. You can come into Hospital as a day case, depending on where you live, but most patients choose to have an overnight stay. You can expect to be back at work within two weeks.
The procedure involves the surgeon placing a silicone band around the top section of your stomach. To loosen or tighten, the gastric band fluid is injected into or removed through a filling port (that sits underneath your skin) this is connected to an inflatable ring which sits along the inner part of the band. This element of the procedure can be performed easily in any of our eight local clinic locations and only takes a few minutes.

What are
the risks?

The gastric band procedure is relatively low risk; however, in the long term a percentage of patients could develop a complication that requires them to need further surgery. Complications can include infection, slippage, erosion or leaks. Most problems can be corrected, and, in our experience, it is rare that a band should need to be removed. Even if you lose all of your excess weight, the intention is to leave the band in place for life, as taking it out would more than likely result in weight regain.

You and
the future

In order to lose weight, you will need to commit to changing the way you eat; the insertion of the band is just the first step in your weight loss journey. You will have to learn to avoid soft or liquid calories, eat healthier foods and chew slowly (if you eat too much or too quickly then you will bring the food back up). Meal portions are usually reduced by two thirds in size.
A number of our team have been through the process and are more than willing to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Our unlimited three year aftercare package will ensure you are supported regularly and locally during the first three years – when the support is most needed.
