Easy ways to increase your protein try using high protein milk after surgery
After weight loss (bariatric surgery) it is important to have a high protein intake, particularly important after a gastric bypass or gastric sleeve (with a gastric band weight loss is slower, there is no malabsorption, although protein is still vital to aid healing). Immediately after an operation the body goes into a state of shock, trying to cope with the physical effects of the surgery and recovering as well as a reduced intake and absorption of energy. Eating enough protein whilst following a liquid or sloppy diet is very difficult as the food tends to be less easy to pureed and also more fibrous and difficult to digest. The aim to work towards is to have 60-80g of protein a day,
If you enjoy milk one way to increase your protein intake is to use high protein milk for at least two weeks after bariatric surgery, and longer if needed. This can be used in the same way that you use milk normally – in drinks, as a drink, on cereals. It can also be added to yogurts or low fat custard, even into soups.
Recipe
1 pint 568ml of skimmed milk
60g or 4 heaped dessertspoons of skimmed milk powder
1 measure 1 pint skimmed milk into a measuring jug
2 put the skimmed milk powder into a bowl and whisk in the liquid skimmed milk until smooth
3 keep the high protein milk in the fridge and use within 24hours
A pint of this milk provides 41g of protein.
