Gastric Bypass surgery is the number one most popular choice of weight loss surgery available in the United Kingdom right now. Here are our top tips on how to deal with your weight loss journey, helping you to prepare, recover and maintain your new lifestyle.
1) Prepare
Your journey begins now! Your dietician will give you a pre-op diet to follow, and it’s extremely important that you stick to this. Following your new diet will help to reduce the amount of fat around your liver and spleen, making the surgery an all-round safer experience for you. If the diet is not followed for any reason, it can result in cancellation of surgery, as it may stop your surgeon from being able to see specific anatomy.
2) Surgery Day
Perhaps one of the most nerve-wracking days of your life, but need not be- you are in safe hands! Ensure that when the day finally comes around, you don’t eat or drink anything at all (including water) unless you have been given specific permission to do so by your nurse or surgeon. Upon arrival you will meet a variety of people, including your nurse and surgeon, who are there to help you- don’t be afraid to ask any questions!
3) Recovery
The scary part may be over, but now the hard work begins. You will likely stay in hospital around 2 days, but this may be longer depending on your personal surgery. Whilst recovering, remember any incisions will be sore, but this can be managed with medication- so don’t worry! Take any visits from your nurse or surgeon seriously, and make a note of any discharge information, including any medications you may need once home.
4) Back Home
Remember to take any medication that has been given to you as prescribed to keep any pain and soreness at ease. It’s also vital to take small walks often, but don’t overdo it- a few walks around the house a day is fine. Dehydration is a huge risk after any surgery, so make sure you up your daily water intake to keep yourself hydrated. Lastly, hit the pillow and sleep! You won’t only be tired, but sleep helps aid the healing process.
5) Maintaining
After six weeks of eating liquidised, pureed and soft food, you’re gastric bypass will be ready to take on a long-term diet. Try to eat little and often, around 5-6 small meals a day and avoid snacking. Calorie counting isn’t the only answer to maintaining your weight loss, and at this point you should also be able to begin exercising, incorporating everyday activities such as walking and gardening into your routine.
