A Bariatric Christmas Carol- or ‘How the Dickens can I lose weight!’
Christmas can be a time of reflection and then the New Year ushers in a time of change. This is the theme of the famous book by Charles Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol’. The story can relate to us all when we are confronting or jolted into any life changes. Maybe your weight is reaching the point where your health is affected, or you are fed up with living a life to accommodate your weight rather than doing what you want to do. So, the key maybe is to look to Christmas past, present and yet to come!
In the story the Christmas carol, Scrooge has to confront his past and current behaviour in order to change the rather grim picture that was painted of his future.
The ghost of Christmas past came to Scrooge and showed him that his love of chasing money and being mean led to his fiancé leaving him, and general dislike from all around him. What would your ghost of Christmas past say? Perhaps some of those things that we feel we must eat at Christmas are just stuck ways of thinking. Habits we developed when we were young that we just can’t shake. Sometimes, with help, our traditions can be dropped, and we don’t even notice.
The ghost of Christmas present then reminded Scrooge about the way he was living his life at the moment, he was being mean and people avoided him. Our present, can mean we are just continuing our own unhelpful habits. Sometimes it becomes a tradition, who every said that we should always have a big tin of quality street every year or chocolate advent calendars or 5 packs of mince pies! We continue things that we have always done without question.
The ghost of Christmas yet to come showed scrooge his grave with nobody mourning his passing. His servants stealing his money and the only people pleased to see him gone were those that owed him money. This is a bleak picture! What does our future hold? Certainty excess weight can lead us to suffer with our mental and physical health such as diabetes, high blood pressure and some forms of cancer.
The good news is that Scrooge did change! After looking at his life he made a complete U turn and became generous and well liked. Perhaps this Christmas is the time to break from our old ways of thinking and look to a life more fulfilled. We can change our traditional way of eating and there is help available to do this using the tools of the gastric band, bypass and sleeve.
So your Christmas yet to come ….will show you confidently socialising wearing what you choose to, knowing that your health is improved and you have the energy back to dance all night, and share this special family time! Merry Christmas one and all!
