After Bariatric Surgery, it isn’t all about hearts and flowers! It can be a roller coaster ride, with many ups and downs. Emotionally and physically.
Many patients can feel overwhelmed and tired and often ask themselves – “have I done the right thing?” Others feel a sense of happiness and joy and will often say “why didn’t I do this sooner?”
Feelings of regret/remorse
Weight Loss surgery is a big life changing decision, but it should lead to your better wellbeing in the long run. However, the changes in your life style can cause feelings to surface, and this could be a form of grieving for your old life and previous relationship with food. Do not panic! This feeling can be normal and should pass as your health improves. Think about the positives:
Improved mobility
Reduction of medications as your health feels the benefit of your weight loss
A better attitude towards healthy food
Compliments and improved self esteem
Increased life span
A new passion for shopping.
Ways to avoid feelings of regret
Learn as much about the surgery beforehand, understand what to expect and how it can be a difficult transition.
Seek supportive friends and family, who understand just how much it means to you to lose weight, and to be on this journey.
Prepare emotionally. And remind yourself that the period of transition and adjustment will not last forever. You will have a set of new habits and be able to say goodbye to your old ones.
Maintain motivation by asking yourself – “Why do I want to lose weight?” Is it to improve a current medical condition? To give you more energy? In order to create new life opportunities?
Relationship changes
Your relationships with others may change after your weight loss. Your partner may experience some feelings of insecurity, especially when others comment on the change in your physical appearance. Try to include your partner when making the decision to have your Gastric Band, Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass.
Remember - You will feel more confident in yourself, so ensure that you instill confidence in your relationships too. Hugs and kisses really do equal hearts and flowers! Enjoy your ride.
