My gastric band was my saviour, it literally gave me my life back! It enabled me to cross my legs, wear lace up shoes and the confidence to don a swimsuit once again.
Of course, there were times when I hated it and it became my foe rather than my friend. Such times included: pain when I had overeaten, pain when food became stuck above the band, and pain when I would regurgitate my last mouthful. However, this pain was all induced by my greed and impatience.
However I had many years of loving my Gastric Band. It taught me to make healthier food choices. For example: a McDonald’s treat for me became a chicken salad rather than a Big Mac. I learned to love those chicken salads (and still do). My band gave me a desire to eat fish rather than red meat, and vegetables rather than chips. My friend constantly reminded me when I had eaten enough. What a tool!
It goes without saying that losing the weight made me feel better about myself, improving my self-esteem. But most importantly, the weight loss resulted in an improvement in my health. It was a good friend to me.
Just under 2 years ago – my gastric band was removed and I had revisional surgery. I was very anxious at the prospect of having such a big operation. However, I knew that I would always need a weightloss tool to help me for the rest of my life. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Gastric Bypass.
So what do I miss about my band?
That wonderful feeling of fullness after a small portion of food. (with a bypass, you can feel nauseous after eating the wrong type of food, or too much of it)
I miss that “squeezing “ sensation as food used to pass through my band, making me feel fuller for longer
I have never been a grazer so the Band was perfect for me, a 3 meal a day girl! (I do forget to eat regularly since my Gastric Bypass)
I could have a few glasses of wine and not turn into a crazy lady! (alcohol has an immediate affect after a Bypass)
Should I admit to this? I actually miss being able to have an occasional dessert! (I have to avoid sweet things now)
My ample cleavage! Since I have had my Gastric Bypass, I have lost a further 35kgs, resulting in a rather small chest!
We had fun together for those 9 years and I am eternally grateful to my friend for allowing me to take back control with my eating. Just like any good friend – always take care and look after them, and they will continue to look after you!
