A Guide to: Overstitch Treatment

Many people who have previously undergone gastric bypass surgery find that after initial weight loss success, they begin to regain. Overstitch is a non-surgical procedure that is a great way to help those who are experiencing weight regain after gastric bypass surgery.

There are a number of possible reasons as to why a person may gain weight after undergoing weight-loss surgery, for example it could be down to the gradual stretching of the opening into the stomach. As this opening begins to slowly expand, you may begin to feel less full and therefore go on to eat greater portions of food.

A relatively new procedure, overstitch is non-invasive and is at a low risk due to it being performed endoscopically with a stitching device, placed into the stomach through the mouth. The enlarged gastric bypass pouch is then stitched from within in order to reduce the amount of food it can hold. The great thing about overstitch procedures is that there is no cutting involved, which then means no stapling, open wounds or scarring upon healing. The entire procedure takes less than an hour and is carried out with the patient under general anaesthetic.

You are eligible to undergo an overstitch procedure if you have previously had gastric bypass surgery and are finding that you are regaining the weight you previously lost. Though there is solid evidence to suggest that you may lose around 50-60% of your regained weight, it is impossible to predict exactly how much weight you will lose due to multiple factors, including your willingness to adapt to a healthy diet and exercise routine.

What are the advantages of overstitch treatment?

The overstitch procedure offers certain benefits, including the following:

  • Less invasive and no incisions, unlike multiple other procedures
  • Quick procedure compared to traditional surgeries
  • Patients in and out of hospital on the same day
  • Low risk of complications both during and after procedure
  • Same rate of weight loss as original bariatric procedure

If you’re interested in losing the weight you have regained since gastric bypass surgery and want to do so in a non-invasive, non-surgical way, the overstitch procedure could be perfect for you.
