In the 1950s the first attempt at a gastric bypass was performed and by 1991 the surgery was used as an accepted treatment for morbid obesity. In recent years it has become one of the most popular bariatric surgeries available. A gastric bypass is also known as a Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass which works by bypassing the first section of the small intestine, the rest of the intestine is reattached to a new pouch that the surgeon creates using a stapling technique.

The result for many patients is a dramatic weight loss in the initial months following the procedure due to the reduced food intake and important hormonal changes which result in a much reduced appetite. Other significant benefits include the remission of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnoea.

What are the risks?

There are a small number of complications associated with the surgery which can be serious including; leaking, blood clots and haemorrhages. We at The Bariatric Group have some of the leading surgeons in the country whose professionalism and skill has allowed our patients to have minimal, if any complications.

You and the future

Prior to having the operation we recommend that you follow our pre-operative diet (also commonly known as the liver reducing diet) to minimise risk and to prepare you for the lifestyle change required after the surgery.

We have an excellent unlimited 2 year aftercare package to ensure you are fully supported from the start and throughout your journey.

Arrange an appointment or simply call a member of our staff who will then guide you through the procedure and answer any queries you may have.

The Operation

The gastric bypass operation is performed using laparoscopy keyhole surgery; it is a major operation lasting one and a half hours. You can expect your hospital stay to be two nights, with a recovery time of two-four weeks before you can go back to work.

The operation involves the creation of a pouch, essentially stapling the stomach to make it smaller; this is then connected to the intestine, bypassing the remaining stomach which allows food and beverages to only enter the new smaller stomach.

Gastric Bypass Success Stories

Jack Northam

I lost 11 stone

My name is Jack Northam. I am a 21-year-old from Plymouth and I had the Gastric Bypass operation just over a year ago in February 2012. I have struggled with my weight since the age of about five. Being bigger than other kids my age was tough, and it slowly progressed over the years. Luckily for me I have always been sporty so for a while it held the weight gain at bay. But from 15/16 years old I could start to feel the difference and it took its toll on my sporting lifestyle.

Unfortunately my dad, who has now passed away, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008 when I was 17. From then until the date of my surgery I lost control and stopped caring about my weight. This resulted in me becoming a terrifying 25 stone. At that stage I knew something had to be done and I accepted that I needed help. After researching online I came across The Bariatric Group and thought long and hard about what they had to offer. It was a big step but if I continued to gain weight I wasn’t going to reach my 30th birthday.

And so I decided to have weight loss surgery which turned out to be the best decision I ever made and I haven't looked back since. Now I can play football 3/4 times a week, I love swimming again and I have the confidence to do things I used to struggle with.

I am more outgoing, more confident and I have been lucky as I have had constant support from my girlfriend, family and friends. In just over a year my weight loss is 11 stone 5 pound in total which puts me at a more respectful weight of 13 stone 10 pound. Another 1 stone 10 pound to lose and I will be where I want to be! If you are like the old me and you are thinking about this operation, don't let fear or embarrassment stop you. Although a Gastric Bypass is a lot of money, don’t let this get in the way either – when you put the figure into perspective your health is much more important than expensive possessions like a car or a house.

Anyone who is thinking about having this done should be confident and positive about the whole procedure. I was back to work two and a half weeks after the operation when they said to expect around 4 to 6 weeks off. Go for it you won’t look back.

10 years ago, my weight was a BIG issue. I had been battling with my obesity for over a decade and it had spiralled out of control. I was wearing size 26, was on medication for heart burn and my knees ached and crunched. I was lethargic, depressed and miserable.

I then made a decision to have a Gastric Band and literally my life changed. Within the first year after surgery, I was wearing a size 16 and I felt like a new person. My band gave me control back. I was able to come off my medication and I even started cycling! Life became easier…and better.

Fast forward 9 happy years.

My life with my band was then becoming more difficult. I noticed that my diet had become quite restrictive and I was always standing up to eat. An x-ray showed that my band was far too tight and overly restricted and the reason I was standing up to eat, was because my muscles in my oesophagus had stopped working and the food was only going down due to gravity. My band was then emptied to resolve this and I promptly gained 1 stone! My snoring also returned.

I then made the decision to have my Gastric Band removed and have a revision to a Gastric Bypass. I had always secretly known that a Gastric Bypass was more suitable for me, as I have a sweet tooth and a passion for cheese and wine. So I went ahead and had my operation at the end of March in 2015.

The first 2 months post-op were quiet difficult. I made a few errors with my food choices, but I lived and learned. My diet is far more varied now. I eat what my family eat, but in a smaller portion. I do avoid chocolate, cheese and other high fat and sugar foods, and I find living with my Bypass much easier than it was with a band.

I have lost over 5 stone since I had my surgery, and I am now in a size 10. I have found it hard to adjust to my body. I sometimes don’t recognise myself. I do have some loose skin now (as overall I am over 9 stone lighter), but I accept this as a side effect of weight loss. I feel so much better now. I have more energy and zest for life. Getting dressed is easy – you don’t have to think as much about what you wear! I just throw on a pair of jeans and feel confident in them.

The Gastric Bypass is the most invasive form of bariatric surgery, but it is the Gold Standard. Before my revisional surgery, another patient who had been through a band to bypass revision said to me – “Ali, it’s the difference between driving a Mini or a Ferrari”! She was right, the Gastric Bypass does give you fast results and the ride so far has been exhilarating!

Chris

For as long as I can remember I have battled with my weight. I have tried every diet imaginable, from sensible eating plans and exercise regimes, to extreme faddy diets, and even hypnosis! I always put on a brave face, and tried my best not to let my weight bother me, but I was just ignoring the problem and in denial about the seriousness of my weight. There was only so long I could pretend everything was alright and I was happy. I used to dread going to new places, always worried about if I would fit into chairs, or even worse – if a chair would take my weight. Instead of buying clothes that I liked, I bought clothes that would fit, and finding clothes that would fit was becoming more and more difficult. I would feel physically sick at the thought of having to but new clothes. Even though my family and friends were supportive, I increasingly felt like I was an embarrassment to them. When I had my son I realised how important my own health was and wanted to make sure I would be around for him as long as possible. It was then that I began to look into weight loss surgery. I tried for over three years to have weight loss surgery on the NHS, but with no luck. Weight loss surgery was a huge financial commitment for me, but I realised it was an investment in my health and decided to have surgery with The Bariatric Group. Surgery really was the only option left for me.

Deciding to have weight loss surgery with The Bariatric Group was the best decision I ever made. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner! I weighed 27stone when I made the phone call to The Bariatric Group. All the staff were really supportive, honest and non-judgmental. I met with the surgeon who explained that I would have to lose some weight before my surgery, so I followed a strict diet for four weeks, with the advice and guidance of a dietitian. I lost 1 and a half stone before my surgery. I opted for a gastric bypass and my surgery went really well with no complications. I made a good recovery and have had amazing weight loss results. My total loss so far is 11 and a half stone. I have gone from a dress size 32/34 to a dress size 16/18.

Deciding to have weight loss surgery was one of the most difficult choices I’ve ever had to make. It wasn’t an easy thing to do, and I have had to work hard in order to achieve weight loss results.

From the start, The Bariatric group have been amazing. All of the before and after care I have received has been fantastic, and I know they are only a phone call away if I need any more support. I truly believe that weight loss surgery saved my life, and I will forever be grateful to Mr Welbourn, the surgeon who performed my operation.

My life has changed so much since my surgery. I fell more confident, happy and most importantly I am healthier. I no longer dread going to new places and don’t even have to think about if I can fit into a chair or not. I have found a new enthusiasm for life. Weight loss surgery really has given me my life back, and enabled me to be the person I always wanted to be. For the first time ever I am winning the battle, and in control of my weight. There really aren’t enough words to describe how amazing that feels!

Christine

I was 58 years old and had spent the whole of my adult life on a diet. With each failed attempt at the ‘latest’ diet, I became more and more depressed. I hated getting out of bed in the morning. I wore a size 26 and weighed 19 stone 2lbs. I felt so tired all of the time. My health was also suffering; I had been diagnosed with diabetes, my cholesterol was 6.9 and I had been taking medication for 15 years due to reflux. What else could go wrong?

I was sat watching television when an advertisement for The Bariatric Group appeared. I picked up the telephone and gave them a call. I was offered a 1:1 consultation free of charge and this was really useful, as it gave me the opportunity to get answers to all of the questions that were rushing around in my head. That day changed my life; I booked in to have a Gastric Bypass.

I had my surgery on March 18th 2009. Two weeks after surgery I was able to stop taking the medication that I had been prescribed for reflux, three months later my diabetes had resolved and my cholesterol was reduced to 3.2!

I cannot tell you how much this weight loss surgery has changed my life. I have so much energy now and cannot wait to get out of bed in the morning to see what the day is going to hold.

A year later, I now wear a size 16 dress and weigh 12 stones 9lbs. I am so much happier and am well on my way to my target weight of 11 stone 5lbs.
