The gastric balloon (Orbera) is a small, soft silicone balloon that is inserted into the stomach and filled with saline. The balloon is a procedure that assists with weight loss and lasts a maximum of six months, giving you the necessary time and support to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Expected weight loss is between 15-20kg (2-3 stone)* with excellent success rates for long term weight loss.
The Orbera is available to those with a BMI of 27 or above, it does not require you to follow a special diet prior to its insertion, nor does it involve a general anaesthetic.
What are the risks?
There are small risks associated with the insertion and removal of the balloon so it is essential the balloon is removed after six months to minimise any risks.
You and the future
During the six months that your balloon is in place, you will be monitored regularly; you will also receive expert lifestyle and nutritional advice from our Specialised Dietitian. This will help ensure that you continue with your new eating plan once the balloon is removed.

This procedure will involve you being mildly sedated, the balloon is then placed in your stomach via your mouth during a simple 20-30 minute 'endoscopic' procedure, and the soft silicone balloon is filled with saline through a self-sealing valve where it remains for a maximum of 6 months. For the first week you will follow a liquid diet with instructions to drink plenty of fluids, you will start eating solid foods again with advice from our specialist bariatric dietitian. It is removed 6 months later with the same procedure.
