Holidays – A Whole New Adventure after Bariatric Surgery

Whilst I was on holiday earlier this year it dawned on me– just how much obesity can affect your ability to enjoy yourself. During a boat trip, I was happy to jump into the deep turquoise waters and swim into very dark caves. (I would never have done this before I had bariatric surgery and lost 9 stone!). Getting back up the ladder was a doddle (my husband didn’t have to lever me up out of the sea) and I finally had the confidence to sit and sunbathe in front of other people! (Years ago, I would have covered up and sweltered).

Whilst soaking up the sun, I noticed that another boat had arrived at this beautiful spot (Kleftico – Milos). Out of the corner of my eye, I watched two morbidly obese ladies, struggling to put on their flippers, and immerse themselves into the warm and inviting waters. After receiving help from their partners, one lady then got herself wedged on the ladder and face planted into the sea! Once in, they were unable to keep up with the tour guide and one even swam back to the boat - as she was unable to swim the distance. I felt sad for them. Both were missing out on a truly remarkable experience. It made me realise that for all of the years that I was morbidly obese with a BMI approaching 40, I too had deprived myself of adventure.

Obesity really does inhibit you – it debilitates you – It’s a chronic disease.

My husband has always been the action man in our household and my weight really used to hold me back. How the tables have turned! I feel unstoppable. My Gastric Bypass has breathed life back into me. I now have to confidence and more importantly, the fitness levels to really start enjoying life. I have just started horse riding and I am now considering investing in a kayak and even donning a wetsuit!

Let the adventures begin!
