Bin or keep?
This is a time of year when we are look at foodie trends, we thought that we would take a look at some of them and consider whether to bin or keep.
Forget coconut water the one to watch this year is watermelon water- sales in Waitrose have risen 43% year on year. It contains vitamins and minerals and is high in electrolytes so great at rehydrating.
Verdict -It’s a keeper. Tasty and simple. May be as well to actually eat the watermelon though to get some fibre as well, and tends to be one fruit that is more tolerable after weight loss surgery. Healthy drinks are here to stay, probably good to check the sugar content though.
Ready meal kits
Ready weighed and prepped ingredients in kits. These can be picked up at supermarkets or delivered to your door. Ideal for the time poor who still want to cook using real ingredients, they claim to only take as long as a ready meal to prepare. Can save on waste as all the ingredients are used, maybe more cost effective for singles or couples. May be useful after surgery as you can divide the ingredients up into several meals also saves on buying packs of ingredients that you will never eat.
Verdict it’s a keeper. Saving time but feeling that you have a home cooked meal is a winner, also it’s all there no more searching for the missing ingredient.
Carrot and beetroot yogurt anyone?
Verdict – not sure on this one. Raita is lovely with a curry but as pudding? Does contain calcium though so a winner on that front.
Corgettii/ cauliflower rice and other strange uses for vegetables
This trend is refusing to disappear with most supermarkets now selling their own versions of ready to eat vegetables, disguised as carbohydrates.
Verdict may be useful especially for people who have had a gastric bypass and looking for an alternative to the dumping inducing carbohydrates. Otherwise have it if you want but nothing beats a small amount of real spaghetti and rice, feels a bit of a gimmick and those of us who have bought a spiralizer may gently push it to the back of the cupboard.
Nobody is really sure what this means …isn’t it just about having healthy, proper food made from scratch no additives etc? Seems to only count if you post it on social media. All a bit of a faff.
Verdict – bin….it’s way too smug. Pushed by glamorous young types.
New super food seems to be in everything from crisps to pasta. Not that new really ….been around for years… ask the Welsh.
Keep- really good source of iodine and this has been shown to be majorly deficient in the population.
We are sure there are many more foods to come our way and a lot of them are worth trying out- after surgery it is good to have an open mind about food the aim is to challenge your beliefs and behaviors after all!
